23.12.12 Halloween is short for All Hallows' Eve, the evening before All Hallows, or All Saints' Day. Halloween celebrations date back over two thousand years, originally descending from the Celtic festival "Samhain" – a festival marking the beginning of winter and the new year. Samhain was celebrated on the night of 31st October. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV proclaimed November 1st as “All Saints Day”, wishing to distract the English people from pagan customs. Later the church proclaimed November 2 as All Souls Day, a day to honor the dead. However, traditions have remained in national memory, and to win them up to the end and it was not possible. Last years the holiday has thoroughly come back to Europe, it also is popular and in some Asian countries. Children dress up in scary costumes of monsters and go to neighbors to get candy. Also masquerades are arranged, and the hollowed out pumpkin with carved eyes and a mouth and a candle inside is exposed at the window to ward off evil spirits. By the way, a pumpkin is the invention of Americans. Before in Ireland and Scotland terrible masks with candles inside cut out from turnips and potatoes, and in England are from a beet. 31.10.2012 News and events: archived. |
